The Cliff Joins the Beatles tour kicked off on Saturday night and yippee the concept works. Audiences in both Bathurst & Wagga were very enthusiatic and responsive and gave us a standing ovation and 3 encores e.g. ‘Blew my mind, ‘the best’, ‘amazing’, ‘From the accents to the jokes, the music, the atmosphere – bloody brilliant! respectively. I also learnt a few things on the road too. Wagga Wagga isn’t as far from Bathurst as I thought nor Wagga Wagga from Sydney. When I first read the itinerary I thought we would be crossing a few time zones. What made the time go quicker was the great company the Beatle Boys were. We chatted on topics such a religion, politics, without an argument, and made comparisons between the ‘hysteria’? for One Direction & the Beatles – no contest. I predict that in a very short space of time the Beatle Boys will have made their mark internationally as the premiere ‘Beatles’ band. Roll on the rest of the tour.

Beatles Rooftop Concert Recreation Sydney

We had as our backdrop the most beautiful harbour in the world with the Sydney Opera House to one side and the Sydney Harbour Bridge on the other. The BB pounded out a short set of Beatle classics including those that were played during that short London set back on January 30, 1969 such as Get Back, Don’t Let Me Down. They added a few more Beatle classics such as Revolution, Drive My Car and Happy Birthday as a homage to 50 years of the greatest rock band the world has seen and is likely to see. ‘Cliff’ threw in a couple of hits and we jammed together on the last few. History almost repeated itself when a call came in, apparently from the Sydney Harbour Foreshore Authority, demanding an end to the concert because of noise complaints but unlike the Beatles’ London concert nobody was going to pull the plug like the London Bobbies did; everyone was having too much fun.
Unless you were there and lived through the Beatles era you will have no comprehension of the impact that the band had on the world and society at the time, you just won’t get it. But for those of us who did, and for those younger folk today who wished they did, today was something very special. For those who are ambivalent, you can go please yourselves. We who did are the lucky ones.”

What Gear to Wear?

Thank you to everyone who commented on the outfits you think we should wear. We have taken them all on board and I think we will please a few of you and maybe disappoint others but you certainly gave us food for thought so when we walk out on stage during the tour some of you can say to the person/s sitting next to you “that was my idea” while others will think to yourselves “they didn’t listen to a word I said.”

OK absolutely no excuses. I have been absent for a long while but I’m back in the Zone and I’m after your help in choosing the stage gear for the Cliff Joins the Beatles tour. Me & the Beatle boys have been agonising over the ‘LOOK” for our concert. The challenges are? It’s 1969, the final year of the group and they’ve become individuals within a group. Should they be dressed the same as in the early days or be showing their individual personalities. Remember for the most part they were dressed uniformly because in the later years they did not tour but filmed or did one off shows. Add Cliff, who will be spending a good time on stage with them and it becomes a real challenge. So give us your thoughts and ideas. Do we have any fashion gurus out there. Where is Ralph Lauren when you need him?

The Waugh Factor

Barratt Waugh has joined the Cliff & Dusty Tour from the UK and has made an instant impact. The audiences love him and his voice just soars. If there is anyone else in the world with a bigger vocal range then they’ve been hiding. It is no wonder Sir Cliff Richard ask him to join his Royal Albert Hall concerts. His soaring voice just fills the theatre and leaves audiences mesmerised. I am just so pleased I invited him to join this current tour. Australian’s have not heard a voice like this before and it is no wonder his album I Love You Goodbye is already No5 on the Classical Charts. It is contemporary classics but whatever tag you give to his music his vocal range is just breathtaking. Bring on the rest of the tour.

There is a Taronga Weather God

It had @%)*# rain all day in Sydney. We arrived at the Zoo for sound check. It was bucketing down. We wondered who would come out in this? 30 minutes from show time the audience appeared as if from nowhere, the skys cleared and not another drop. An occasional look at the stars, and the moon even peeped out as if to say ‘sing a song about me.’
Sheena sang up a storm as Dusty (excuse the pun) and there was a real buzz about. From the bleakest of weather outlooks sprang one of those special nights; the view, the animals and some very resilient humans who came to party. Bring on the tour.

Twilight At Taronga

If there is a better concert location in the world I’d like to hear about it. Performing at Twilight at Taronga www.twilightattaronga.com.au in March is going to be one for the showreel. How often do you get to sing outdoors with the magnificent Sydney Harbour and the Opera House at dusk as your backdrop. There is something quite surreal about performing in concert with one of the great concert venues of the world in the background but hey, someone’s got to do it.

Cliff & Dusty tribute tour dates announced today at www.martyrhone.com This show is going to contain some really serious hit songs, like 2 hours of them such is the catalogue of these two greats but I am also very excited to have Sir Cliff Richard’s protege Barratt Waugh joining us from the UK for this tour. Barratt has toured twice with Cliff including a 41 date sellout stint at the Royal Albert Hall. So look out for us because we’re coming to a city near you. I’m joined by Sheena Crouch as Dusty and Barratt for this 3 month tour that will take us right across Australia from east to west, north to south and places in between. Hopefully we’ll see you there.
